An El Monte man admitted this week to fatally shooting his boss at a newspaper office in Alhambra in 2018.

Zhong Qi Chen, 63, pleaded guilty on Monday, March 27, in Alhambra Superior Court to voluntary manslaughter and admitted to a gun allegation, said Greg Risling, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Chen will face 21 years in prison at his May 1 sentencing, Risling said.

Chen was originally charged with the murder of 58-year-old Yining Xie of Arcadia with the allegations that he personally used a handgun and caused great bodily injury and death. If he had been convicted as then charged, he would have faced a possible maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison.

On Nov. 16, 2018, Xie was shot in the head and torso at The China Press at 2121 W. Mission Road. Police found a handgun at the scene, and Chen was arrested that day.

As of Friday, Chen was being held without the possibility of bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.
